There are mature forest stands in the Mt. Washington Wilderness, but
perhaps the most interesting aspect of this wilderness, at least to
the casual visitor, are the massive flows of volcanic rock. The
flows from the Belknap Crater and Little Belknap Peak are some of
the most recent flows in Oregon (2,000 to 3,000 years old)

The best trail to take through the lava would be the segment of the
Pacific Crest Trail that runs from highway 242 (the McKenzie Pass
Highway) to Highway 20. The Hand Lake Trail and the Deer Ridge Trail
skirt most of the lava and travel through the trees of the
wilderness. |
